Green Guerrillas Host Step It Up Rally!
We were happy to partner with a broad coalition of SF green groups to host the one and only Step It Up event in San Francisco. The event was a huge success- with over 150 participants, a Toss Out Fossil Fuels sock toss, solar powered smoothies from greenpeace, carbon-eating algea and tons of green politicians stepping up to the microphone.

Guerrilla Raid on City Hall!
After San Francisco's Board of Supervisors voted overwhelmingly to pass the Community Choice Aggreagation Implementation Plan (9-2), we heard word that the Mayor was seriously considering vetoing the legislation. Although this would have been a tough battle for him because he would of had to get two of the Sups to change their votes, we had to be sure that PiG$E's man in City Hall felt some pressure from his constiuents. Before we were escorted out of the building by security we mangaged to make it to all three of Newsom's offices, telling his staff not to worry, we had captured the PiG$E paid for Newsom impersonater(see bobble head Newsom in pic) and that CCA was now safe from potential veto.

Gavin in bed with PiG&E!
Action Outside City Hall during the Budget Finance Committee Meeting about Community Choice.
He's made a point of endorsing Community Choice Aggregation, a plan to move the city's energy infrastructure away from PG&E towards significantly greener pastures. Community Choice would switch San Francisco to 51% renewable energy without raising our rates, so it's no surprise that most of the Supes are behind it, environmental and ratepayer activists are behind it, green energy providers are behind it and Gavin....says he's behind it.
The trouble is that for someone preparing to ditch PG&E he's being awfully clingy. He shows up for photo op after PG&E photo op and ditches press conferences on Community Choice. It turns out that PG&E, the cities second largest political contributor, funneled over $30,000 to programs politically benefitting the mayor. Gavin's strong ties to P&E and the hollow lip service he's giving Community Choice are both raising serious questions about his commitment to a cleaner energy future in San Francisco. Earlier today Supervisor Amiano publicly questioned whether Gavin was trying to "sabotage" the legislation, while outside of City Hall members of the Green Guerrillas Against Greenwash asked: "Is Gavin in Bed with PG&E?"

Guerrilla Theatre on 21st Anniversary of Chernobyl at PG&E Headquarters!
A puke lime 30-foot banner hangs over a plaza at PG&E's headquarters reading 'lets green this city'. The plaza is tiled with an Earth Day invitation. That's right. The perfect setting for a street theater performance highlighting the company's shameless greenwashing.
On the 21st anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe, at 6:30 pm on April 26 2007, a dozen people participated in the guerrilla street theater performance. Directly below their banner, our banner read:
0% Solar 23% Dirty nuclear
lets dump PG$E
Dressed up as PG&E CEO in a suit and green tie (as CEO Peter Darbee is known to wear at environmental events), the character brushed green paint over kneeling particpants - who had facts about PG&E's dirty energy and Community Choice Energy as a real green alternative - written across their chests. As the play ensued, a character described the impacts of Chernobyl - including tens of thousands of cancer victims, the death of 15,000 emergency workers within 3 weeks, and the deformed babies that continue to be born today - 21 years later.
A dialog between the kneeling victims and the CEO ensued; and the CEO danced around with glee at the successful greenwashing of San Francisco and federal government. "Not a single one of the half-dozen climate change bills in Congress have any restrictions on nuclear energy! My $30 million legal department is getting a bonus this year!"

Step It Up Bike Action!
On Saturday, April 14th, we organized a bike tour of the activities scheduled for Step It Up 2007 - a National Day of Action Against Climate Change. The tour began at 16Xmission - went through 3rd Street where we stopped at Burning Man's Green Man event and learnt about how to reduce MOOP (matter out of place) in our costumes for this year's burning man:) Green Man is the theme of burning man this year, and we hear that the grid is to be powered by solar. We then set out to chrissy field where we stopped at the clean car expo, checked out some blue tape marking future rising water levels in SF -- and ended up happily at ocean beach where we danced in front of the cops.

Toxic Tour of Hunter's Point with Literacy for Environmental Justice
On Saturday, April 7th we organized a toxic tour of the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. The tour, which was put on by Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ), provided an enlightening & disturbing history of the toxic legacy left by the now defunct Naval shipyard and the recently closed PG$E power plant. Unfortunately, many of us Bay Area residents are unaware that the Bayview Hunters Point community has had to put up with both a superfund sight and an 80 year old coal burning power plant in their backyard for way too long. In order to increase awareness of these issues, we hope to continue to partner with LEJ in order to organize future tours. So if you are interested in learning more about the toxic legacy of the Navy & PG$E as well as important redevelopment issues, please let us know.

Challenging the Mayor's loving relationship with PG$E
We just crashed the March 21, 2007 press conference where PG$E and Mayor Newsom were taking credit for using $1.5 million rate-payers' money to install solar panels on the Giants' stadium. We informed the press (including interviews with KRON4, KCBS, and KQED, Fog City Journal) about our concerns about such token environmental projects, when real climate policy solutions should be the priority.
While it's great that the Giants' are going solar, we're concerned about the Mayor lavishing praise on PG$E and announcing several partnerships with PG$E over the last couple months, just as City Hall looks to make a final vote on Community Choice Aggregation. CCA will break PG$E's dirty monopoly and create 3,000 times the amount of solar than the instalation on the stadium. They did not allow any public questions at this press conference - probably because we were there in our "Green Markets Not Dirty Monopoly" and "Community Choice Not PG$E" Tshirts - and our factual fliers about the greenwashing fest.
When I pressed the Mayor about the issue he told us that "of course" he fully supports Community Choice Aggregation. We want that to be the case, but we're not going to hold our breath until we see him prioritize it on his 2007 agenda. Check out our full message, "Why Is Gavin Getting in Bed with PG$E?"

Opposing PG$E's Proposed Rate Hike at CPUC Hearing
PG$E is working to make it harder for San Francisco to switch to clean, green Community Choice Energy, and they're asking us to foot the bill. Check out our press release and our coverage on KPFA (3/4 way through), California Energy Markets, and SF Chronicle. Check out the full statements made by the Green Guerrillas Against Greenwash to the California Public Utilities Commission meeting on March 15, 2005:

"Future of Green Energy" action at Commonwealth Club's Green Energy Event
"The Future of Green Energy" was the topic of speech given by PG$E CEO Peter Darbee at a $300 and up Commonwealth Club awards dinner at the Fairmont Hotel on Feb. 22, 2007. Darbee did not mention his plan to limit PG$E’s renewable energy portfolio to the bare minimum legal mandate. Nor did he talk about his efforts to massively expand nuclear by positioning it as a ‘clean energy’. Nor did he mention his company’s decade long track record of lobbying against expanding solar energy.
But he did wear a green tie.
The carefully orchestrated talk did not involve questions from the audience nor any mention of Community Choice Energy policy that would move San Francisco to 50% renewable energy. We anticipated this, so our collective of committed citizens stood outside with banners, fliers and formal futuristic attire - glitter space boots, tin foiled arm bands, shiny stilt-walking, and Jane Jetson masks - to remind everyone that the future of green energy is not with PG$E. We withstood the hail storm, and got the word out that the future of green energy is with Community Choice Energy, a plan that will break PG$E's monopoly and dramatically increase renewable energy without raising our energy bill.

Making Out For Environmental Justice at the LGBT Center
Here are the pictures from our first action, which targeted PG$E Co. CEO and reached State Assemblyman Mark Leno who participated in a massive greenwashing fest of the LGBT center. State Senator Carole Migden respected our protest and cancelled her commitment to speak at the event. We successfully reminded the city to "Love Solar. Love LGBT. Question PG&E. Check out the coverage in the Guardian.
